Back To School!

Summer has been a blast, but it's flying by y'all!  Once we are past 4th of July it's time to start getting prepped for back to school.  Most of the districts here in Tennessee start back first week of August and there are a few that start as early as July 18th and 25th.  The reason for this is because they take more breaks during the school year here.

I follow Kristen Donegan from Easy Teaching Tools.  You can follow Kristen here @easyteachingtools.  Last week Kristen posted a quote on Facebook that really resonated with me. Check it out below.

I couldn't agree more! Like many in education, I've had the privilege of working with so many amazing kids along my journey.  I just love those sweet faces and incredible personalities, and it can be hard to say goodbye.

Thinking about this quote, I decided to create a back to school activity for students when they return.  It's from the book called Our Class Is A Family, by author Shannon Olsen.  You can follow Shannon here @lifebetweensummers

This is a perfect back to school book and craft to help with initiating classroom community, establishing expectations, and to build positive relationships with your students. Below I've added a couple of ideas to create a beautiful and fun bulletin board.  I think adding you own "sugar and spice" to make it fit your classroom is what makes this so fun!

Here is how it works:

1. Read the book OUR CLASS IS A FAMILY.

2. Have kids cut out all parts and glue them to construction paper.
(I like to cut the construction paper to fit the house, so there is no excess paper when hanging them on the bulletin board.)

3.  Have kids write on writing pages.

4. Have kids color house, draw a portrait of themselves and sign name below.

5. Print out kids pictures and cut and glue to house.

6.I have added large and small letters for the heading to add to houses and bulletin board.

That's it!  Just print, cut, color, glue and staple. To get this activity click here. Link to book here.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!
